An article written on current events is generally considered to be a news article and it contains information about a certain current event that is generally considered important to most of the population. Someone who writes these kinds of articles will usually use the form of writing that is called the "inverted pyramid". This is where the most important issues of the story come first at the top of the pyramid and then everything else gets prioritized from the top down.
If you have decided to write a news story you will first of course need to decide upon what the topic will be and what kind of information that you are going to need in order to write about the topic. You will need to research your top by getting information from credible sources. Some of those sources could be the library, periodicals or even published studies on the topic you are interested in. You can tell if a source is credible by their credentials and where and how they go their own information. The reason for having a source is to try and persuade people on a certain viewpoint with an objective source.
You will also need to try and look at your topic with different viewpoints and then gather up all of the information from those viewpoints. You will need to include both the pros and the cons when you are gathering your information. You should also make sure that you have all of the facts correct. It's not a good idea for you to assume that the information you have gathered is true and accurate. It's up to you as the writer to make sure that it is reliable.
You also might want to interview people that might have some relevance to your topic or event that you want to write about. Make sure that these people are well versed in the topic and that you can verify that they truly have the experience or the knowledge to give you the information that you are looking for. Make sure that you interview people that are on both sides of the topic or story.
Here are a few questions you need to ask yourself when you are trying to compile your story:
- Who did this happen to?
- What actually happened?
- Where did this happen?
- When exactly did it happen?
- Why did something like this happen?
- How did it actually happen?
It's probably a good idea to actually write out your answers and don't just answer them in your head. This way you can look back upon your answers when you are trying to write your news story. The answers will also help you check and see if you've included everything that's needed.
Once you have done all of this you can start writing your article. Remember, you need to put the most important fact about the story in the beginning or in your opening sentence. Once you have done that you can then go down the pyramid and take the second most important fact until you get to the bottom of your pyramid. The reason by the way for using this inverse pyramid is just in case if there is someone that is going to edit your work happens to cut some of the article in order to fit their publication, they more than likely are not going to cut out the beginning of a story.
When you are writing your story make sure that you use very clear words and that you have active language. You also should not show that you have a particular opinion on the topic either, the reader must be able to read the story without feeling the story is one sided. When you are done with the story make sure to go over the six questions to see if you answered all of them. If so, check grammar and spelling and then send in your article.
